Korean Language and Studies Courses in English Offered in the Seoul Campus
Introduction to the Korean Language(3 credits)
Introduction to Korean 38144 is the beginning course for those who have no prior knowledge of the Korean language or who are to speak Korean for the first time. This course is designed to help foreign students develop elementary-level Korean language skills. While the 31020 course is a more academic class, this course is less academic and more casual. It will focus on conversations rather than on grammar studies.
The students will nonetheless learn how to read and write Hangeul and will be made to carry out cultural projects to understand the Korean culture.
Basic Korean for foreigners(3 credits)
Elementary Korean 31020 is the beginning course for those who have no prior knowledge of the Korean language or who are to speak Korean for the first time. This course is designed to help foreign students develop elementary-level Korean language skills. It covers the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary necessary for basic conversation, reading comprehension, and writing sentences to help the students build a solid foundation for further Korean language study. The course also provides useful information concerning the Korean culture (where it touches language and communication) and everyday life in South Korea.
Intermediate Korean for foreigners(3 credits)
Intermediate Korean 31021 aims at helping the students acquire the language skills that they need to be able to read, write, listen, and speak in intermediate-level Korean. It is designed for students who have taken elementary Korean courses or have had the equivalent training in basic reading, writing, listening, and speaking language abilities. In addition to textbook study in the classroom, some fundamental Chinese characters will be introduced.
Advanced Korean for foreigners(3 credits)
Advanced Korean 31674 is a course for foreign students who have completed two years of Korean language study. It will provide the students with opportunities to develop advanced and intellectual Korean speaking and writing skills and will focus on a wide range of vocabulary words, discussions, and presentations based on readings on various topics, such as the Korean culture, history, economy, politics, and multimedia, from newspaper and magazine articles. The students will achieve an advanced level of proficiency not only in interpersonal communication but also in interpretive and presentational communication, through authentic materials.
Korean and Northeast Asian Economies : A comparative Study(3credits)
Course Title: CKS 304 Korean and Northeast Asian Economies: A Comparative StudyThis introductory course to the Asia-Pacific region consists of two major parts. The first part explores Korea’s relations with the Asia-Pacific region through a close analysis of ten one-hour television/video programs that will provide the students with vivid portrayals of the histories, geographies, politics, and cultures of nine Asian states. The history of the Pacific Basin for the last 150 years is a saga of vast changes, from colonialism to the emergence of the independent nations of Indonesia and Vietnam, from agricultural economies to the industrialization of Japan and Singapore, and from ancient empires to the nascent democracies of South Korea and Taiwan.
Exploring the Korean Performing arts with Field Trips(2credits)
This class explores the Korean performing arts by studying its basics in class and by personally watching or participating in such performances.
Culture and Education in Korea (3 credits)
This course aims at introducing the Korean culture and education in English. It is a course for foreign students who want to study in Korea (Korean students are discouraged from taking this course).
It focuses on illuminating the conventional values and attitudes of the Korean society based on Confucianism, and investigating Korea’s traditional and modern educational ideals, practices, and institutions.
Exploring Korean through Film (3credits)
This course, which was specially designed for non-Korean students, aims at helping the students understand the Korean society and culture through the Korean cinema. Undoubtedly, film, a popular/mass art, is the locus of sociocultural realities. By watching Korean films from the 1950s to the 21st century, this class will explore the various faces of the modern Korean society.
Korean Folklore and Culture (3 credits)
Focuses on the general understanding of the Korean culture, particularly the Korean folklore, such as seasonal customs and rites
Exploring the Modern Korean through Film (2credits)
Understanding the Korean Culture was designed to help foreign students understand the Korean culture at the college level. The students will learn and discuss a wide range of issues related to the Korean culture, including: (1) everything that foreign students need to learn in relation to the Korean culture; (2) the traditional Korean culture; (3) the modern Korean culture; (4) the characteristics of the Korean people; and (5) insights regarding the Korean culture reflected in Korean movies and songs.
Korean History and Culture (3credits)
This course will trace the history of Korea from its opening to trade and diplomacy in 1876 to the present time. The students will learn both the stories about and the interpretations of the major events and changes in the modern history of Korea.
Korean Language and Studies Courses in English Offered in the Anseong Campus
Introduction to the Korean Language(3 credits)
This course was designed for exchange students who have absolutely no knowledge about the Korean language, and for the students who want to enjoy their campus life by overcoming their communication barrier rather than just study all the time.
Through this course, the students will be able to speak some Korean for a convenient campus life, and will be able to express what they want to express in Korean.
The students will learn about the Korean grammar, useful Korean expressions, and pronunciation. Much of the class time will be devoted to speaking practice.

This course was designed primarily for exchange students who have absolutely no knowledge about the Korean language, but it can be useful as well for those who know some Korean grammar and words for greetings. Through this course, the students will be able to speak some Korean for a convenient campus life, and will be able to express what they want to express in Korean.
The students will learn about the Korean grammar, useful expressions, and pronunciation.
Much of the class time will be devoted to speaking practice.
Intermediate Korean for foreigners(3 credits)
This course is for exchange students who have learned Korean for one semester in Korea or for one year in their home country. The students will learn practical Korean in an easy and interesting way to improve their everyday communication skills.
Advanced Korean for foreigners(3 credits)
This course is for exchange students who can communicate fluently and comfortably in Korean.
The students will learn elegant and advanced Korean rather than merely simple expressions.
Korea Writing (3 credits)
College lectures differ from high school lectures in that in the former, both the professor and the students participate whereas in the latter, only the professor speaks most often. All the lectures in this course may require one to two reports per semester, consisting of writing assignments. Most of the reports, together with the presentations, are important bases of the final evaluation. Through this course, the students will learn how to write reports effectively to learn much and to obtain high grades.
Korea Reading (3 credits)
This course is for exchange students who wish to study intermediate and advanced Korean. The students will learn about the Korean culture, politics, economy, and history by reading about these.
Korea Speaking (3 credits)
This course is for exchange students who wish to study intermediate and advanced Korean. The students will learn about the Korean culture, politics, economy, and history by reading about these.
Exploring the Modern Culture (2credits)
Understanding the Korean Culture was designed to help foreign students understand the Korean culture at the college level. The students will learn and discuss a wide range of issues related to the Korean culture, including: (1) everything that foreign students need to learn in relation to the Korean culture; (2) the traditional Korean culture; (3) the modern Korean culture; (4) the characteristics of the Korean people; and (5) insights regarding the Korean culture reflected in Korean movies and songs.
Current Korean (3 credits)
This course is for exchange students who can freely communicate in Korean. The students will analyze, discuss, and make presentations on the Korean economy, politics, society, culture, and arts.
