Chung-Ang University (CAU, President Park Sang-gue) was selected for the “Metaverse Graduate School Support Project,” and would receive KRW 5.5 billion in government subsidies over six years to train global experts in the metaverse field. It is expected that CAU will lead the developments in global metaverse content and technology.

Recently, CAU’s Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film was selected for the Metaverse Graduate School Support Project organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

It is a government financial support project that encourages overall education, research, and industry-academic cooperation to train high-level convergence talent related to metaverse. The project’s goal is to improve the competitiveness of the metaverse industry, a platform that will accelerate innovation across the industry and a representative new industry in the digital era, and to create a competitive edge in the market.

The Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film, which was selected for the project, is a specialized graduate school that was established in Korea in 1999. It focuses on multidisciplinary convergence research that combines visual arts and engineering technology. It produces world-class research results and next-generation content planning experts, as well as award-winning and invited works at various film festivals and contests, producing unrivaled results in the metaverse field, video-related artificial intelligence research, video content production, and human resources training. This has become possible because of its outstanding capabilities to win orders for research projects and human resources training projects worth KRW 14 billion, including the previously selected BK21 Plus Project and OTT Specialized Graduate School Support Project, as well as the current support project.

Baek Joon-ki, professor of the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film, and chief of the research, said, “CAU has exerted plenty of efforts to expand the metaverse, including establishing a virtual convergence university centered on realistic media, establishing a digital twin hospital, CAU Gwangmyeong Hospital, and holding a metaverse job fair. With the success of this project, we will be able to maximize metaverse-related synergies. In the metaverse field, which is attracting attention as the next-generation video content environment, we plan to train talents tailored to metaverse by fostering engineering technology and artistic content production capabilities.”

Following the selection for the project, CAU will establish a new “Department of Metaverse Convergence” at the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film. Nine major Meta Fusion courses will be created:  ▲Meta+Scenario, ▲Meta+Art/Creation, ▲Meta+Webtoon ▲Meta+Culture/Exhibition, ▲Meta+Studio, ▲Meta+Shopping, ▲Meta+Game, ▲Meta+Medical, and ▲Meta+Character, and corresponding curriculum programs specialized for each major will be introduced.

The graduate school will launch aggressive operations to meet two goals simultaneously: producing metaverse experts and conducting convergence research. It also plans to provide exceptional benefits to students, including support for project production costs and scholarships.

President Park Sang-gue said, “We expect that CAU’s metaverse-related capabilities, led by the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia, & Film, will be further enhanced following the project. We aim to strengthen programs on industry-academia cooperation centered on faculty with abundant field experience. We will spare no effort in ensuring that field-friendly education can be applied in actual industrial settings.”
