As a celebration of its 110th anniversary, Chung-Ang University(CAU) is partnering with the University of Oxford, one of the world’s most prestigious universities, to enhance global academic exchanges and expand future interdisciplinary research.

On the 18th, CAU invited a delegation from the University of Oxford to the Main Auditorium in Building 102 on the Seoul Campus to host an academic exchange session and a special lecture. The event was held to commemorate CAU’s 110th anniversary, bolster its global competitiveness, and materialize collaborative interdisciplinary research combining the humanities and arts with cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI).

During the session, the two universities engaged in in-depth discussions on academic exchange and research collaboration across various fields, including the humanities, arts and culture, AI, Korean studies, and K-culture. Introducing the newly established Oxford Centre for Korean Studies, Professor Jieun Kiaer emphasized, "Hallyu must evolve beyond a passing cultural trend into a solid global academic foundation."

President Park Se-hyun suggested ways to create synergies between the two universities by introducing the research capabilities and vision of CAU’s K-Culture Convergence Center. In his welcoming remarks, President Park stated, "Celebrating our 110th anniversary this year, Chung-Ang University is embracing bold challenges to integrate our rich tradition of humanities and arts built over more than a century with emerging AI technology." He added, "Based on the shared values between the University of Oxford and CAU, I hope we can break down academic boundaries and together set a new global standard for higher education."

A special lecture by Professor Daniel Grimley, moderated by Dean of the College of Humanities Choi Young-jin, followed the session. Opening with an appreciation of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ celebrated piece “The Lark Ascending,” Professor Grimley illustrated the positive impacts of music on emotional stability and communal solidarity, drawing upon ancient philosophers’ music theories and real-world examples. Professor Grimley remarked, "Music encourages us to listen to one another in new ways," emphasizing that "the humanities and the arts must stand at the heart of university curricula in this rapidly changing era."

The subsequent Q&A session featured a thoughtful discussion on the trajectory of art amidst the rapid advancement of AI technology. Stating that "machines cannot sense or feel," Professor Grimley emphasized the intrinsic value of human experience in creative processes. While acknowledging the potential benefits of AI-generated music, he called for an urgent response from academia to address ethical challenges, such as protecting intellectual property rights of original creators and ensuring proper attribution.

Taking this landmark visit by the University of Oxford delegation as a stepping stone, Chung-Ang University plans to further solidify its global partnerships in celebration of its 110th anniversary, while expanding joint research and student-faculty exchanges with leading world institutions across all fronts.
