ASEAN University Network & ASEAN+3 Educational Forum was held for a period of five days from May 1st to 5th, 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This event, organized by Universitas Indonesia, served as a platform for ASEAN+3 students and faculty to discuss the role and direction of higher institutions in the digital age. From Chung-Ang University (CAU), Prof. Galas Jan of the School of Business Administration, along with students named Yang Hee-sun of the School of Business Administration and Jung Ju-sung of the Department of International Logistics, attended.

ASEAN University Network event, first held in Thailand in 1998, had been mainly about exchanging opinions until the sixth forum. From the seventh to this one (18th), however, more opportunities have been provided to universities, including their students, by adding Young Speaker’s Contest. This year’s event also consisted of two parts–Young Speaker’s Contest and Educational Forum–and offered the participants a chance to think about the relevance of higher education in the digital era. CAU student surnamed Jung had a discussion with representatives from other countries and expressed thoughts on effective educational system in the digital era. Prof. Galas Jan took part in the discussion as the panel of judges. In addition, another CAU student surnamed Yang, as the representative student of Korea, mediated different opinions and successfully drew a joint statement with unanimous consent after multiple revisions.

In this event, CAU, on behalf of Korea, explained how well both the Korean government and universities are responding to the changing trend in the educational sector, driven by digital technology. On top of this, CAU introduced Korea’s best practice of the application of K-MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) to ASEAN+3 counterparts so that they could utilize Korea’s example as an effective solution for their future working model. This would ultimately lead to more vibrant cooperation among member countries. CAU not only boosted the national standing on the global stage, but extensively promoted Korea’s globalized education model and the way that the Korean government applied K-MOOC to the educational system to other countries. This laid the solid foundation for both the Korean government and universities including CAU itself to further promote cooperation with ASEAN member countries and better network with them.
